STREESHAKTI : Women’s Empowerment

At “Hope For Children Care Foundation”, we believe that first step to all social changes is self-realization and individual empowerment.

Various studies, and our experience, have shown that when we work towards women’s empowerment, the whole society benefits. But unfortunately in India, far from empowering women, most are denied even their basic rights like health, education of girls, employment and a respectable status in society.

Streeshakti, meaning “women’s power” in English, was pilot running, then stabilized. This program challenges through a simple yet effective approach. The programme is specifically aimed at realization of both individual and collective self-esteem and inner strength for marginalised and socially excluded women and adolescent girls through innovative community practices. A tailor-made strategy 4’s pillar has been developed under Streeshakti, the women empowerment program. The ‘4 S Pillar’ is an acronym for four novel approaches, namely Seeking Healthcare as a behavior, Help for Education and Build skills, Encourage Male Involvement, and Sustaining the Change in Societies. The program identifies adolescent girls and women from the community and develops them into Change Agents, who in turn actively contribute to the community mobilization process.

So far, Streeshakti through women’s education empowerment program and health and Skills programmers has successfully made a difference to the lives of over 60,000 women and girl children.

What We Did Last Year

We trained over 100 women and adolescent girls to be “Change Agents” to further serve as Community Health Educators, Health Volunteers and Peer Educators in their communities.

Under Streeshakti program, over 40,000 women and girl children benefitted and empowered through various interventions.

Over 1500 girls and women received health care support at their doorstep, and we provided adequate knowledge of reproductive and sexual health issues to many more.

Inspiring Stories

“I was sick for the longest time and had lost all hope of giving birth”
-Rakhi

Because of her husband’s repeated demands and the constant pressures from her family for a child, Rakhi had conceived four timers in two years but could not give birth because of her failing health. The family did not seek any good medical help, and she kept on suffering. Rakhi had lost all hope when volunteers from Streeshakti came to know of her condition. They immediately sought medical advice for her and repeatedly counseled her husband, making him realize his responsibility towards her well being. Rakhi began paying attention to herself, taking a healthy diet, and in no time started blossoming again, with her husband by her side. She is six months pregnant now and ready to experience a happy motherhood.
